Drawings, modern art in graphite/charcoal on paper.
Phoenix Arizona
Modern art drawings in graphite, charcoal, pen&ink, brush&ink; a unique style of abstract expressionism.

The recent Faces series is from wanting to express people, complex, dualistic, emotional and physical as drawings. Not portraits in general, some are interpreted portraits of people passing by or sitting nearby, as personal views into the world; many are styles, repeated in similar yet individual layouts.

Educational Background
Pasadena High School, 1964. Senior Class President.
University of California at Berkeley, 1964-65 freshman year.
    Central Oregon College, 1966-67.
    Seattle Central Community College, 1972-1975.
    University of Washington, 1975, 1982.
Degrees:
Associate of Arts and Sciences, Computer Operators Certificate
    Seattle Central Community College
First formal art schooling at UC Berkeley, later in Seattle a minor in Art from SCCC, sculpture: etchings, lithographs, monotints at Cornish along with dance best at jazz, worst at ballet; off and on life drawing; silk-screen. Sculpture of many types mainly in stone, wood and welded steel to armature-wire-cement outdoor constructions; sold at Seattle's Public Market, good experience.

But the major was supposed to be art-architecture-engineering, and, there was no way to get into the school of architecture for over a year so plan B was computers for a skill with a minor in art. After graduation the period beginning in early 1970 generated hundreds of works. Over time the art came and went in "eras" with a lot of work then nothing for a while, yet, with photography throughout.
In addition to computing the artist has been studying and working in related fields, such as sailboat design and wooden boatyards, then kites and kitemaking as a partner in a small business that also retailed kites and gifts. Sounds quaint but allows an idea to go from cutting the pattern into the sky in a few hours, then there are fighter kites! Kitemaking is an art so drawing took on a more mundane design sketch world, but drawing is then the creation of an object that flies ...
Then, moving to Phoenix where the wind is too much or not enough and it's too hot to stand there, it's back to drawing, figuring out what it was that put together fine art as technique, concept and execution. Picasso was the huge influence, having seen the movie by his photographer friend, it reinforced the way this artist naturally drew. What a burden that lifts in the act of creating. This influence kept the eras not too far apart and each time the artwork was better in fresh ways so it's easy to think this helps the creative path, finding novel things. It's just enough of a break with the past to jump a step over in some facet of the whole.
So, it now seems to flow out of the mind and onto the paper in a way in which people react to it as art and yet it's done quickly, as expressions. This suits me well as emotions are rarely long lasting, but the drawings are. And, so many of them are good designs, so, they are becoming the inspiration for paintings and sculptures.
